The Prom (musical)

The Prom (Music from the Netflix Film) · 01

Changing Lives

Mrs. Greene
Let's get to it.
All those in favor…
All opposed.
Well, the PTA has an accepted set of rules concerning the prom.
Young ladies must wear non-revealing dresses.
Young men must wear suits or tuxes.
And if a student chooses to bring a date, they must be of the opposite sex.
Film cast
Well, can't you just ban this student?
Mrs. Greene
Well, we've been advised that there may be some legal repercussions
if we prevent this girl from attending,
so although it breaks my heart, we have no choice.
Film cast & Mrs. Greene
There won't be a prom. - Mrs. Greene, a question.
Film cast
Have you asked the students what they think of this?
Are you choosing not to comment?
Hey, there's Emma! Can we get a comment?
Can you answer some questions?
Can we get a statement?
Emma, what do you think of the PTA's decision to cancel prom?
Emma, do you have a response?
It's Frank DiLella with New York 1's On Stage.
We're here for the opening night of Eleanor! The Eleanor Roosevelt Musical,
starring the incomparable Dee Dee Allen.
Dee Dee Allen & Film cast
Dee Dee! You're a Broadway star. - Yes, I am.
Film cast
You have your choice of roles. What drew you to Eleanor?
Dee Dee Allen
Well, Eleanor Roosevelt was a brave, powerful, charismatic woman
who no one had ever heard of.
Her story needs to be told.
People need to know it is possible to change the world,
whether you're a homely middle-aged First Lady
or a Broadway star!
Film cast
Barry Glickman! You were brilliant as FDR.
Barry Glickman
From the moment I first stepped into FDR's shoes…
And when I say "shoes," I mean wheelchair.
…I had an epiphany.
I realized there is no difference
between the president of the United States and a celebrity.
We both have power. The power to change the world.
It's a weighty responsibility.
Let's talk process.
Film cast
When I'm in character, I go insane
I stagger, I stammer, I sob
I make the audiences feel my pain
And if they don't leave depressed Then I've not done my job
Each time I find a role like Eleanor
The artist inside of me thrives
I put on that wig And those prosthetic teeth
And know I'm changing lives
By the time I get tuberculosis In act two
Even the people who are dead inside
Will shout, "Bravo," on cue!
All
Bravo!
Sheldon Saperstein
The first review is in. New Jersey Star-Ledger.
Dee Dee Allen
Don't tell me…
Barry Glickman
Unless it's a rave or a mixed-positive.
Sheldon Saperstein
It says we're a hit!
Barry Glickman & Dee Dee Allen
Oh, my God!
Film cast
We're a hit and I think we deserve it
That's for sure
Also, it means that this tour de force
Will not be forced to tour
Dee Dee Allen
To Eleanor! May she run for eternity!
All
To Eleanor!
Film cast
Cheers to a show that's so inspiring
It's almost too much to sit through
And if we run That might mean one more thing
That in ten years or so
We'll do Eleanor Two!
I can predict What the reviews will say
Before the next notice arrives
It's ground-breaking
Earth-shaking!
Life-affirming!
Breathtaking
Gut-wrenching!
Heart-aching
In two words, it's history-making
That's why every actor strives
For adulation
And compensation
That comes from nightly
Changing lives!
Dee Dee Allen
It's just what we do.
Sheldon Saperstein
The rest of the reviews are coming in!
New York Post, Associated Press, New York Times.
Barry Glickman
The New York Times!
Wow…
Dee Dee Allen
What?
Sheldon Saperstein
Wow…
Dee Dee Allen
What's happening?
Sheldon Saperstein
This is not a review you want when you have crappy advance sales.
This is gonna close us.
Dee Dee Allen
What didn't they like? Was it the hip-hop?
Sheldon Saperstein
Yes, but not only that.
Barry Glickman & Sheldon Saperstein
For God's sake, Sheldon. Just read it. - What? Read.
Sheldon Saperstein
Okay, just the highlights.
"Barry Glickman's FDR might just be the most insultingly misguided,
offensive, and laughable performance
that this reviewer has ever had the squirming misfortune to endure."
Barry Glickman
That's not so bad.
Barry Glickman & Sheldon Saperstein
Do her. Do her. - I'm just saying.
Dee Dee Allen
Oh? Mmm.
Sheldon Saperstein
"Watching Dee Dee Allen's Eleanor Roosevelt
croaking out a heavy-handed message of activism
is like paying an aging drag queen
to shove a syrup-soaked American flag down my throat."
Dee Dee Allen
Well, that…
That's not criticism.
That's just… It's just a per… …a personal attack.
Sheldon Saperstein
"If you're considering buying a ticket to this show, do yourself a favor."
"Buy a few feet of good, heavy rope instead
and then go hang yourself."
Barry Glickman
Oh, God! Oh, God!
What? Was the show really that bad?
Sheldon Saperstein
It's not the show. It's you two.
You're just not likeable.
Barry Glickman & Dee Dee Allen
What? - What?
Sheldon Saperstein
Nobody likes a narcissist.
Dee Dee Allen
Oh, this… - Oh, that.
Sheldon Saperstein
Leave it to me. I'll go and try and change the narrative once again.
Dee Dee Allen
I hate this world! This is bullshit! - Just horrible. It's just… It hurts.
Barry Glickman
It… It hurts my heart.
Dee Dee Allen
Where did everybody go?
Barry Glickman & Dee Dee Allen
What can I get you? - Yola Mezcal blackberry smash.
Trent Oliver
My condolences, Dee Dee.
But remember, you have friends.
Dee Dee Allen
Thank you. Who are you?
Trent Oliver
Trent Oliver.
Dee Dee Allen
Uh, oh…
Dee Dee Allen & Trent Oliver
We've done five shows together. - Oh, really? Oh, my God.
Barry Glickman
Trent went to Juilliard. Won't shut up about it.
Dee Dee Allen & Trent Oliver
Oh, right, Trent! Of course, Trent! - Trent.
Dee Dee Allen
Why are you dressed like a waiter?
Trent Oliver
I'm in between gigs at the moment.
Dee Dee Allen
Hmm.
Trent Oliver
Honestly, Dee Dee, I feel adrift as I did in my days before Juilliard.
Dee Dee Allen
Oh, my God.
Trent Oliver
You see, my passions are fueled by the power of Lady Theater
and how she can, with a gentle touch of her hand,
sculpt a human soul.
Dee Dee Allen & Trent Oliver
But we learned at Juilliard… - Oh, mother of God.
Trent Oliver
If I could soliloquize, "If you prick me, do I not bleed?"
"And if you do not pay me, do I not still act?"
Dee Dee Allen
That might be enough.
Trent Oliver
Still, I have played Hamlet,
and yet I'm only known as that guy from the beloved early aughts' sitcom…
Talk to the Hand.
I question the very meaning of my existence.
Barry Glickman
Maggie Smith once approached me in a men's bathroom and she said,
"Who sent you? Was it Michelle Dockery?"
"Because the court said 500 yards." You could tell she was scared.
Angie Dickinson
Hey, guys!
Barry Glickman
Angie! Angie.
Angie Dickinson
I'm sorry your show closed on opening night again!
Welcome to the world of the unemployed. Top me off.
Dee Dee Allen
I thought you were in Chicago.
Angie Dickinson
I just quit.
Twenty years in the chorus and they still wouldn't let me play Roxie Hart.
Dee Dee Allen
Aw.
Angie Dickinson
You wanna know who's playing the role?
Film cast
Kelly Ripa? - Cher?
Connie Chung. - Kris Jenner?
Angie Dickinson
No, Tina Louise.
Ginger from Gilligan's Island.
Dee Dee Allen
Oh, my God, is she still alive?
Angie Dickinson
We're wasting our lives.
Barry Glickman
Hmm, it's true. At least we're all in the same boat.
"Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows."
Oh, my God.
Trent Oliver
That's from The Tempest.
Barry Glickman
Okay, one, shut up. Two, I refuse to give up, okay?
We're… We're still celebrities. We still have power.
Dee Dee Allen
Now, The Times sort of castrated you as it were.
Yep. They wrote you off as aging narcissists.
I still don't understand what's wrong with that.
Barry Glickman
There's a very simple way that we can still love ourselves
yet appear to be decent human beings, okay?
We will become celebrity activists.
Angie Dickinson
Oh! Brilliant!
Barry Glickman
Right?
Film cast
All we need is a cause. - A cause célèbre.
Barry Glickman
Everybody think of some causes. Go.
Trent Oliver
Um, poverty? - Too big.
World hunger.
Barry Glickman
That is also a major thing. No, we need something we can handle.
Some little injustice we can drive to. Recycling.
Angie Dickinson
Let's see what's trending.
Barry Glickman
Recycling's good.
Film cast
Why are there so many award shows? - Parking.
Barry Glickman
Or the TVs in the back of cabs.
Angie Dickinson
Oh! Oh, yeah, what about this girl?
Barry Glickman
Oh, my gosh. Check this out.
What girl?
Angie Dickinson
It's all over Twitter.
Barry Glickman
Oh.
Angie Dickinson
She's from Edgewater, Indiana.
She's a lesbian. She wanted to take her girlfriend to the high school prom,
and the PTA went apeshit and they canceled it.
Barry Glickman
They canceled prom?
Film cast
Are they allowed to do that? - No.
Barry Glickman
Principal Hawkins, your response.
Principal Hawkins
The first thing I'm going to do is contact the Indiana state's attorney.
This is not about school rules. This is a civil rights case.
Barry Glickman
Wait, seriously?
Principal Hawkins
I'm betting pressure from the state's attorney will stop these bigots cold.
Barry Glickman
It better. Because I'll tell you this much.
Dee Dee Allen
If word gets out, people are gonna get mad.
Barry Glickman
This pisses me off.
Dee Dee Allen
The next thing you know, some modern-day Eleanor Roosevelt
is gonna march down here and all hell's gonna break loose.
Barry Glickman
We have got to go down there and raise holy hell.
We will be the biggest thing to happen in Indiana
since… whatever's happened in Indiana.
Barry Glickman & Dee Dee Allen
So this is it? This is our cause? - Yes. Are you with me?
Film cast
We'll have a rally! - Yes!
We'll have picket signs! - We'll make T-shirts.
Barry Glickman
We'll get Sheldon to tag along. He can find us a venue.
Dee Dee Allen
Oh, wow!
Film cast
Can we actually do this? - You bet your sweet MILF ass we can!
Dee Dee Allen
We are gonna prove…
